Beehive & Honey

We have a fully working honey extraction plant that is supplied by 600 hives. Pouatu Honey produces the high quality Manuka Honey and Bush Honey which can be bought at the campground. We welcome people to come and view the beehives and the process of making our honey.

The River

The Tangarakau River is a river of the Taranaki and Manawatu-Wanganui Regions of New Zealand’s North Island. It flows south from its sources to the northeast of Whangamomona in the King Country to reach the Whanganui River. State Highway 43, known as the Forgotten World Highway, travels through the Tangarakau Gorge.

Golf Cart

Forgotten World Adventures offers the ultimate way to explore rural New Zealand. In a self driven Rail Cart or on our new Rail Bike, travel along a decommissioned railway line through tunnels and over bridges to townships that have faded into the past.

The Railway

railway

A new railway line was ordered by the Government in 1898. Taranaki needed to hook up with the main trunk line that strode down the centre of the island. The most direct route was from Stratford through Whangamomona, joining up with the Main Trunk at Okahukura near Taumaranui.

Jet Boats

Whangamomona

Named by Lonely Planet as a key highlight on the Forgotten World Highway, Whangamomona is a quaint town 45 minutes west of Stratford.

Whangamomona is famous for its rich frontier history. Frustrated with local councils, residents declared it ‘The Republic of Whangamomona’ in 1989, and held their own presidential elections. The famous Republic Day is held biennially in January, and is enjoyed by thousands of visitors.
